Which careers offer moderate stress levels for Chartered Financial Analysts?

I’m a recent graduate with a CFA background looking for career advice. After a tough internship in equity research I’m now in accounting but it’s not my long-term goal. I’m dealing with some health issues from stress so I need a more balanced work environment.

My current plan:

  • Stay in my accounting job for about 2 years
  • Finish the CFA program (taking Level 2 soon)
  • Look for new opportunities when the job market improves

Questions:

  1. What roles should I consider that match my CFA skills but aren’t super high-stress?
  2. Is my plan solid or should I change anything?
  3. How can I make a good career move from accounting to finance?

I know the first job matters a lot so I want to make sure I’m on the right track. Any tips or insights would be really helpful. Thanks!

Hey Liam39, I totally get where you’re coming from! Have you looked into financial planning or wealth management? These fields can be a bit more chill than the high-octane world of equity research, but still let you flex those CFA muscles.

Your game plan sounds pretty solid to me. Sticking it out in accounting for a couple years is smart - it’ll give you a rock-solid foundation. But here’s a thought: why not start dipping your toes into some finance-y side projects while you’re there? Maybe volunteer to help with financial forecasting or budgeting? It could make your transition smoother down the road.

Oh, and congrats on tackling CFA Level 2 soon! That’s no joke.

I’m curious - what drew you to finance in the first place? And what kind of work-life balance are you hoping for in your next gig? Knowing that might help narrow down some good options for you.

Hang in there with the health stuff. Remember, no job is worth sacrificing your wellbeing for. You’ve got this!

hey there liam39, sounds like ur in a tough spot. have u thought about risk management? its not as crazy as equity research but still uses ur cfa skills. less stress usually. ur plan seems solid, maybe network more in finance while in accounting? good luck with level 2!

As someone who’s walked a similar path, I can relate to your situation. Have you considered a role in corporate finance or treasury management? These areas often offer a good balance between utilizing your CFA knowledge and maintaining a more manageable stress level.

Your plan is sound, but I’d suggest adding some networking activities to your timeline. Attend industry events or join professional groups related to your target roles. This can help smooth your transition from accounting to finance.

Regarding the move from accounting to finance, emphasize your CFA progress and any finance-related projects you’ve worked on. Many employers value the accounting background as it provides a solid foundation for financial analysis.

Remember, it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Take care of your health first, and the right opportunity will come along.
