Hey everyone, I’m an engineer thinking about taking the CFA Level 1 exam. I’m curious about how challenging it might be for someone with my background. Has anyone here gone through this? What was your experience like? I’ve heard mixed things, and I’m trying to get a realistic idea of what I’m getting into. How much time did you spend studying? Were there any parts that were particularly tough or easier because of your engineering knowledge? I’d really appreciate any insights or advice you can share. Thanks in advance for your help!
As an engineer who pursued the CFA Level 1, I can offer some insight. The exam is challenging but manageable with proper preparation. Your engineering background will be advantageous in quantitative sections, but be prepared to dedicate significant time to finance-specific topics.
I spent approximately 300 hours over 6 months studying, focusing heavily on areas outside my comfort zone like financial reporting and analysis. The ethics portion, while seemingly straightforward, requires careful attention to nuances.
Leverage your problem-solving skills from engineering, but don’t underestimate the breadth of material. Consider using a structured study program and practice exams to gauge your progress. The key is consistent, focused study and understanding the application of concepts rather than mere memorization.
Remember, many engineers have successfully navigated this path. Stay disciplined in your approach, and you’ll be well-equipped to tackle the challenge.
hey emma, engineer here who took cfa lvl 1 last year. it’s tough but doable. ur engineering background helps with quant stuff. spent like 3 months studying, 2-3 hrs daily. accounting was hardest for me, but ethics was suprisingly tricky too. def use online practice questions, they’re a lifesaver. good luck!
Hey Emma_Brave! As a fellow engineer who took the CFA Level 1, I can totally relate to your situation.
The difficulty can vary, but don’t let that scare you off! Our analytical skills definitely come in handy, especially for the quant sections. But heads up - the finance and accounting parts might be a bit of a learning curve if you’re not already familiar with them.
I spent about 4-5 months studying, putting in around 15-20 hours a week. It was intense, but manageable. The ethics section was surprisingly tricky for me - who knew there were so many rules?
Have you looked into any study materials yet? I found the Schweser Notes super helpful. Also, joining a study group with other engineers made a huge difference for me.
What area of engineering are you in? I’m curious if you’ve had any exposure to financial modeling or economics in your work? That could give you a nice head start!
Good luck with your CFA journey! Feel free to ask if you have any other questions - always happy to chat about this stuff.
