What led to cursive handwriting being a required subject in schools, and why has it been phased out?

Reflecting on Cursive Handwriting

I remember a time when learning cursive was an integral, mandatory part of our education. Nowadays, even my children’s friends are unfamiliar with it, and some sources even label it an endangered skill. What changes in our educational system have contributed to the decline of cursive writing lessons over time?

During my schooling, cursive was emphasized not just as a way of writing, but as a method to improve fine motor skills and mental organization. However, with the advent of computers and digital communication, the focus shifted significantly towards typing and other technological skills that are more relevant in today’s world. From my observations, educational policymakers felt that time dedicated to handwriting could be better spent on developing abilities applicable to modern workplaces, leading to its gradual elimination from school curricula.
