The impact of AI on educational tech: A case study of Chegg's decline

Hey everyone,

I just read about something crazy happening in the online education world. Apparently, this big company called Chegg is in trouble because of ChatGPT. Their stock has dropped by 99%! That’s insane, right?

From what I understand, Chegg used to be the go-to place for students to get homework help. But now, it looks like a lot of those students are switching to ChatGPT instead. I’m wondering if any of you have noticed this trend or have thoughts on it.

Do you think AI is going to completely change how we learn and get help with schoolwork? Is this just the beginning of a bigger shift in education? I’d love to hear what you all think about this!

Wow, that’s a really interesting topic, Charlotte91! I’ve actually been noticing more students talking about using ChatGPT for homework help lately. It’s kinda wild how fast things are changing, isn’t it?

I’m super curious about how this might affect learning in the long run. Like, do you think students are actually understanding the material better with AI help, or just getting quick answers? And what about teachers - how are they dealing with all this?

I wonder if we’ll see more personalized learning experiences because of AI. Imagine having a virtual tutor that adapts to your exact needs! But then again, there’s something special about learning from real people too.

What do you think about the ethics of using AI for schoolwork? Is it cheating, or just a new way of studying? I’d love to hear more about your thoughts on this!

yo, this AI stuff is crazy! i’ve been using chatgpt for my hw and it’s so much faster than chegg. but idk if its actually helping me learn or just giving me answers. teachers are probly freaking out lol. wonder if schools will ban it or try to use it somehow? what do u guys think?

As someone who works in ed-tech, I’ve been following this Chegg situation closely. It’s a perfect example of how disruptive AI can be. While Chegg’s decline might seem sudden, it’s been brewing for a while as AI tools have gotten more sophisticated.

From what I’ve seen, students are definitely gravitating towards AI for quick answers, but there’s a catch. These tools can’t always provide the depth of understanding that comes from working through problems yourself or with a tutor. There’s a real risk of students becoming over-reliant on AI without developing critical thinking skills.

That said, I think AI will reshape education in positive ways too. Personalized learning paths, instant feedback, and 24/7 access to information are game-changers. The challenge for educators will be integrating AI tools effectively while still fostering genuine learning and creativity.

Ultimately, I believe we’re heading towards a hybrid model where AI augments rather than replaces traditional learning methods. It’s an exciting time, but we need to be thoughtful about how we implement these tools in education.
