Seeking advice: Returning to education as a mature student without high school diploma

Hey everyone! I need some guidance on getting back into education.

I’m currently working in an engineering field, though not as an engineer. I love my job and it’s been great. Recently, my bosses suggested I think about becoming an engineer. It’s something I’ve been considering too.

Here’s the thing: I left school when I was about 15 due to some personal issues. I’m much older and in a better place now, but I don’t have a high school diploma or equivalent.

I’ve been looking at online degrees and distance learning options. The problem is, they all seem to want a high school diploma as a minimum requirement. It’s making me feel a bit stuck and embarrassed.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? How did you handle it? Any advice on who to talk to or where to start would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance for any tips!

I’ve been through a similar situation and can relate to your concerns. Have you considered apprenticeship programs? Many engineering firms offer on-the-job training combined with part-time study. This approach allows you to earn while you learn and often doesn’t require formal qualifications to start.

Another option is to look into professional bodies in your specific engineering field. Some offer their own educational pathways and might be more flexible with entry requirements, especially if you have relevant work experience.

Don’t be embarrassed about your situation. Your work experience and the support from your employers are valuable assets. Consider discussing your aspirations with HR or a mentor at your current workplace. They might have resources or connections to help you progress.

Remember, there’s usually more than one path to achieve your goals. Keep exploring and don’t be afraid to reach out directly to educational institutions to discuss your unique circumstances.

Hey Ryan_Courageous! Wow, that’s awesome your bosses see that potential in you!

You know, I’m wondering if you’ve looked into vocational schools or technical institutes? They sometimes have more flexible entry requirements and could be a great stepping stone. Plus, they often offer hands-on training that might complement your work experience.

Have you thought about reaching out to some local engineering firms? They might have insights on alternative pathways or even apprenticeship programs. Sometimes real-world experience can open doors that traditional education routes might not.

What’s your take on certifications? There are some pretty respected ones in engineering fields that don’t always require a high school diploma. Could be worth exploring!

Keep us posted on what you find out, yeah? Your journey could inspire others in similar situations!

hey ryan, don’t feel stuck! i was in a similar boat. check out community colleges - they often have GED programs and can help u transition to engineering courses.

some even have agreements with universities for easy transfers. talk to their advisors, they’re usually super helpful. good luck!
