Hey everyone! I’m new to Greek mythology and I’ve been seeing a lot of posts about it on Tumblr. Can someone give me a crash course on the main Greek gods? I’m talking about the big names like Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. What are their powers? Any cool stories about them? I’d love to understand the references I see in fanart and posts. Thanks in advance for helping this newbie out!

As someone who’s been deep into Greek mythology for years, I can tell you it’s a wild ride. Zeus, the king of gods, rules the sky and throws lightning bolts when he’s angry (which is often). Poseidon controls the seas and can cause earthquakes with his trident. Hades, often misunderstood, oversees the underworld and judges the dead.
These gods are far from perfect - they’re petty, jealous, and often meddle in human affairs. Zeus is notorious for his numerous affairs, Poseidon once flooded an entire city because he lost a contest, and Hades kidnapped Persephone to be his wife.
If you want to dive deeper, look into the Olympian family drama. It’s full of betrayals, transformations, and epic quests that make modern soap operas look tame in comparison. Just remember, these myths were the ancient Greeks’ way of explaining the world around them, so approach them with that context in mind.
