Picking a career path: Cybersecurity or Computer Science with extra courses?

Hey everyone! I’m in a bit of a pickle about my future studies. My school just started offering Cybersecurity as a major, but it’s not great. The teachers don’t seem to know much about it. In my intro class, the prof talks more about AI than actual cybersecurity stuff!

I’m wondering what you all think I should do:

  1. Pick an easy major and take some cybersecurity classes on the side
  2. Go for Computer Science (it covers lots of stuff) and add some cybersecurity classes
  3. Stick with Cybersecurity and learn a lot on my own through online courses

What do you think would be best for getting a job and learning the most? Has anyone been in a similar spot?

I looked at the cybersecurity classes my school offers, but they seem kind of messy. Some teachers go off-topic a lot. I thought about taking online classes to fill in the gaps, but I’m not sure if that’s enough without good university classes. I also thought about switching to Computer Science because it’s broader, and I could focus on cybersecurity later on my own.

Any advice? I’m really stuck here!

yo nate, i feel ya. computer science plus cyber classes sounds solid, gives u the base u need. also, get into networking and side projects for real-world exp. best of luck, man!

I’ve been in a similar situation, and I’d strongly recommend going the Computer Science route with added cybersecurity courses. Here’s why:

CS provides a robust foundation that’s invaluable in any tech career, including cybersecurity. You’ll learn core concepts that apply across the board, making you more versatile and adaptable.

The cybersecurity field is constantly evolving, so a solid CS background will help you keep up with new threats and technologies. Plus, many cybersecurity roles require a strong understanding of programming and systems architecture, which CS covers extensively.

As for the gaps in your school’s cybersecurity offerings, supplement with online courses, certifications, and hands-on projects. Join cybersecurity forums, attend conferences, and participate in CTF competitions to gain practical experience.

Remember, your degree is just the starting point. In this field, continuous learning is key. Good luck with your decision!

Hey Nate! Man, I totally get where you’re coming from. Been there, done that with the whole ‘what should I study?’ dilemma.

Your situation sounds frustrating, especially with profs going off on AI tangents in cybersecurity classes. Yikes! But don’t worry, you’ve got options.

Have you thought about option 2 - Computer Science with some cybersecurity on the side? It’s kinda like getting the best of both worlds. CS gives you a solid foundation in programming, algorithms, and systems, which are super useful in cybersecurity too. Plus, it keeps your options open if you decide to explore other tech fields later.

But here’s a thought - why not chat with some cybersecurity pros or attend some local meetups? Could give you some real-world insights that your school’s lacking. Maybe there are some cool internships or projects you could get involved with?

What got you interested in cybersecurity in the first place? I’m curious to hear your story! And have you looked into any specific areas of cybersecurity that excite you? There’s so much cool stuff happening in this field!
