Is it possible to grant access to view all Classroom courses without admin privileges?

Hey everyone,

I’m trying to figure out how to let someone see all the courses in our Google Classroom setup without making them a super admin. Right now, I can see everything because I’m the big boss admin. But I want to give this power to another account without handing over the keys to the kingdom, you know?

Has anyone done this before? Is there some special permission or setting I’m missing? It would be super helpful if there’s a way to just let them view the course list without messing with anything else.

I’ve been digging through the admin console, but no luck so far. Any ideas or tricks would be awesome. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hey there GracefulDancer8! :man_dancing::dancer:

Interesting question you’ve got there! I’ve been wondering about something similar myself. Have you thought about creating a custom admin role? I’m not 100% sure, but I think you might be able to set up a role with just the right permissions to view courses without giving full admin access.

What about the ‘Classroom Administrator’ role? Does that give too much power, or is it close to what you need? I’m really curious to hear if anyone else has found a good solution for this.

Oh, and random thought - have you considered reaching out to Google support directly? Sometimes they have neat tricks up their sleeves that aren’t obvious in the admin console.

Keep us posted on what you find out! It’d be super helpful for others who might be in the same boat. Good luck with your quest for the perfect permission setup! :four_leaf_clover:

I’ve encountered this issue in my organization as well. Unfortunately, Google Classroom doesn’t offer a straightforward way to grant view-only access to all courses without admin privileges. We explored creating a custom admin role, but it still provided more access than desired. Our workaround was to create a shared Google Sheet that lists all courses and update it regularly. It’s not ideal, but it allows non-admins to view course information without granting excessive permissions. You might also consider using the Classroom API to build a custom dashboard if you have technical resources available. Ultimately, this seems to be a limitation of Classroom’s current permissions structure.

hey gracefuldancer8, i’ve seen this before. no simple way exists to give course view access w/o admin rights. you might try a custom role with limited perms, but it’s not perfect. alternatively, a shared course list could work, though it’s a bit clumsy.
