ID PhD: Stick With It or Switch Paths?

Inquiry

I’m questioning if continuing my Instructional Design PhD is worth it, considering my waning motivation and the minimal salary bump compared to my master’s. Thoughts?

I recently went through a similar crossroads, and my experience suggests that the value of a PhD must be balanced against both personal satisfaction and long-term career goals. Staying in academia is rigorous, and without genuine passion, the process can become a repeated source of stress. Since the financial benefits are not dramatically higher than with a master’s, it might be more worthwhile to explore alternative paths that align with your current interests. Reflecting on what truly motivates you might reveal a more fulfilling direction, either within or outside the academic world.
