How beneficial is CFA for IIM placements? Does it boost your chances?

Hey everyone,

I’m wondering about the impact of CFA on job prospects at IIMs. Does having a CFA charter make a big difference when applying for finance positions during summer and final placements?

I’m especially curious if finishing CFA Level 3 before summer internships would give me an edge. My grades are 9/78/78 (GEM) and I’ve got a 2-year gap because of work delays.

Given my background, would getting a CFA help make up for any weaknesses if I get into a top IIM or even a smaller one? I can’t decide if I should sign up for CFA Level 1 or not.

Has anyone gone through this process? What was your experience? Did the CFA make a noticeable difference in your job search?

Thanks for any advice you can share!

Hey there!

Interesting question about CFA and IIM placements. I’ve been wondering about this too!

Have you thought about reaching out to any IIM alums who’ve gone the CFA route? Their firsthand experiences could be super insightful.

I’m curious - what’s drawing you towards finance specifically? Are there particular roles or companies you’re eyeing?

While CFA might give you an edge in some finance jobs, don’t forget about the other aspects of your application. How’re you planning to explain that 2-year gap in interviews?

Also, have you considered any alternatives to CFA that might boost your profile? Like maybe some finance-related projects or certifications that take less time?

Keep us posted on what you decide! It’d be great to hear how things work out for you. Good luck with your journey!

As someone who’s been through the IIM placement process, I can say that a CFA can be beneficial, but it’s not a magic bullet. The value really depends on the specific roles you’re targeting.

For pure finance positions, especially in investment banking or asset management, a CFA certainly adds weight to your application. It demonstrates a deep commitment to the field and technical knowledge that many employers value.

However, for general management or consulting roles, which are also popular at IIMs, the CFA might not carry as much weight. These positions often prioritize broader business acumen and soft skills over specialized financial expertise.

Given your profile, pursuing the CFA could help offset the work gap and potentially strengthen your candidacy for finance-focused roles. But it’s crucial to weigh the time and effort required against other ways you could enhance your profile during your MBA.

Ultimately, while a CFA can be an asset, it’s just one piece of the puzzle. Focus on excelling in your MBA program, building a strong network, and gaining relevant internship experience as well.

hey, cfa can help for finance roles. if ur aiming hardcore finance jobs, it’ll give an edge. but for mgmt gigs, not so much. with ur profile, it might boost ur chances if u balance it with mba work. good luck!
