For Instruction Designers: What New Career Paths Did You Pursue?

I’ve spent five years in Instruction Design, enduring exhausting hours and challenging call schedules. Which career change offers a more balanced lifestyle outside of the Ed-tech sector?

i switched to a corporate training role. the hours are less hectic and i found a refreshing new creative angle to my work. it offers more time for life outside work compared to ed-tech!

After spending several years in Instruction Design, I transitioned into a role focusing on e-learning consultancy. This move allowed me to adopt a more structured schedule and develop client-focused strategies that better fit my personal life. The work is challenging but offers a greater degree of flexibility compared to the traditional Ed-tech environment. My newfound approach has enabled improved work-life balance, as I gained more time for personal development. This career path has proven beneficial, both from a professional and lifestyle standpoint.

Hey Ethan85,

I decided to make a pretty bold change a little while back. I left the constant hustle of Ed-tech and stepped into a role as a Learning Experience Designer for a non-profit that’s all about community education. It’s been amazing working with a cause that values impact over profit, and the best part is having a schedule that lets me actually breathe and enjoy life outside work. What I love most is the creative freedom to design programs that really make a difference in people’s lives.

I’d love to know if anyone else has ventured into the non-profit world or similar social impact roles after Instruction Design. What kind of projects or experiences have helped you keep that work-life balance intact? Cheers!

After a long stint in Instruction Design, I transitioned into a specialized role in user experience design with a focus on educational content. This career change has significantly improved my work-life balance. My responsibilities now include conceptualizing and experimenting with interactive learning modules, which means I have more control over my daily schedule. This role provided a welcome break from the regimented call schedules typical in Ed-tech, allowing me to explore creative solutions without the constant pressure of delivering content under tight deadlines.

hey ethan85 i moved into corporate wellness consulting, which gives more balanced hours and lets me explore creative medthods in stress mgmt. switching from ed-tech has been a liberating, rad change overall!
