Duolingo's decline is alarming!

In one year, Duolingo shifted from a supportive language companion to an intrusive, guilt-inducing platform that relentlessly criticizes and pressures its users.

I’ve been a Duolingo user for several years, and I must admit the evolution in its design and approach has felt less encouraging recently. In my experience, the platform’s earlier focus on positive reinforcement has been overshadowed by an emphasis on constant notifications and pressure tactics that can feel more intrusive than supportive. This shift has disrupted the learning process, making sessions more stressful rather than enjoyable or effective. It might be worthwhile for users to explore device settings or even alternative apps to recreate a less anxiety-driven learning environment.

i feel the same. duolingo has become too naggy, all those grim reminders kill the fun. i miss when it didnt nag me all the time. maybe its time for a new app

Hey everyone, I’m really feeling the shift too. It seems like Duolingo went from that gentle nudging friend to, at times, a bit of a pushy sidekick. I’ve wondered if the changes are an intentional move to boost engagement or if they missed the mark on what actually helps us learn without feeling overwhelmed. Have any of you tried customizing your settings to see if turning off some notifications changes your experience, or does it still feel off? Would love to hear if anyone found a workaround or even another app that gives you the positive vibes without the pressure. What do you all think is the root of this change—over-gamification or something else? Cheers for the discussion! :slightly_smiling_face:

I’ve noticed that Duolingo’s recent changes have shifted the learning experience drastically. In my case, the increased reminders and the overall feeling of being constantly monitored have reduced the pleasure of language learning rather than enhancing it. The app now seems to prioritize user retention over genuine learning, leaving less room for the immersive self-paced methods that once motivated me. I’ve started integrating other resources to balance this out while still using Duolingo selectively. The evolution feels more commercial than educative, altering the original charm of the platform.

i feel duolingo’s lost its friendly touch. it now seems more focussed on jamming you with alerts than helping you learn. kind of ruins the chill vibe it used to have, no?
